FAQs

“What is a shelterbelt?”

A shelterbelt is a row of trees or shrubs that protects land from wind and erosion. Shelterbelts also promotes biodiversity, enhance wildlife habitats, and reduce energy costs.

“Who do you work with?”

Our ideal client is working towards making the farm & food system more just, more resilient, more diverse, and more accessible. There are thousands of different ways to do that.

Much of our material is geared towards small business owners (who isn’t filing a Schedule C these days?) but the framework can be applied to anyone.

“Is my client information kept confidential?”

Yes. Client confidentiality is a key element in our fiduciary relationship with you. Please see our privacy policy.

We because we firmly hold that (1) we need to create better money talk in families and (2) community-based peer learning is critical to success, we do offer public space to talk about money and financial issues. These are optional services and you can share however much or little about your situation as you feel comfortable in these spaces.

“Is there a discount if I don’t use the tax service?”

No. If we get the financial planning part right every year, tax season should be a bit easier on all of us. To deliver the same value, we’d have to coordinate efforts with your outside tax preparer– and that can take almost as much time and effort than handling the taxes ourselves.

“Can you work in any state?”

Firstly, we only work in the USA. We are fully remote. We are licensed to prepare taxes in any state (but we have a responsibility to only do so in states that we know well). Financial advising has a bit more red tape built in and there may be a brief delay in starting to work with you if we need to register as advisors in your state.

“What are you not?”

A bookkeeper, business mentor, marketing firm, technical advisor, or a financial coach. Super valuable services — you should have some them on your team — but not what we do.
